Demo Mode & Guided Tours

Most pages in UpChannels have a demo: a copy of the page filled with sample data, with a guided tour that walks you through it. A demo never loads or saves your store's records, so you can click around freely and nothing changes. Open one with the amber Demo button at the top right of a page, and leave with Exit Demo Mode.

Overview

  • Sample data only. A demo shows the real page's layout filled with sample orders, customers, products or numbers. Nothing you do there is saved, and none of your store's records are shown.
  • 41 demos. 39 pages have a Demo button, Settings included. Two demos have no button of their own and open from a link on their settings page, or by their address: the driver's route screen and the customer portal (see Demos without a Demo button).
  • The tour starts by itself the first time. A spotlight tour opens the first time you open a demo page. Once you have closed it, your browser remembers that demo and it doesn't open by itself again. Take a Tour (or Take the tour) in the amber banner replays it from step 1, whenever you like.
  • Most controls are switched off. Buttons, fields and forms are greyed out. Tab bars and a few view switches and filters still work, so you can look around.
  • A few links are real. Some demo links open the real page and take you out of demo mode (see What works in a demo).
  • Plans don't lock demos. A Basic store can open the demos of Pro and Premium pages (Workforce, Messages, SMS Campaigns, Transactions, the finance pages), and a store without the Bank Reconciliation add-on can open that demo. Roles and feature switches are not checked either. The one exception is the Settings demo, which sits behind the same check as the rest of Settings.
  • Sample data can match your business. 16 demos show sample products and records for your store's business type (set in Onboarding), for example Create Order, Products, Inventory, Procurement and the Sales Report. The rest use one fixed appliance-store sample. The full list is in the Detailed reference.

Open a demo

  1. Open the real page from the sidebar.
  2. Click the amber Demo button with the Play (▶) icon at the top right of the page header.
  3. The demo opens in the same browser tab. Its title ends in "— Demo", an amber banner sits above the content, and the guided tour starts.

The button looks the same almost everywhere. The exceptions:

PageWhat is different
Order Management (Sales → List)An amber tile with the Play icon above the word "Demo", first in the header toolbar
Google Ads Insights (Growth → Ads & Sales)A blue-to-indigo Demo button
Labels (Inventory → Labels)A white Demo button with an amber border
Expenses (Finance → Expenses)A plainer amber Demo button with a thinner border and a smaller icon
DashboardThe label follows the dashboard's language switch (中文 shows 演示)
Messages, SMS Campaigns, TransactionsOn the Basic plan (not on a trial) the page is locked, and the Demo button floats at the top right, above the upgrade panel
Procurement (Inventory → Procurement)From the Import tab, Demo opens a demo of just the import screen. From anywhere else it opens the four-tab demo. A store with no procurement orders yet is shown Import because the other tabs are locked, but that does not count as choosing it: its Demo still opens the four-tab demo
Bank ReconciliationDemo is in the header in every state — while the page loads, after a failed load, without the add-on and before a bank is connected. The Bank feeds add-on and Connect your bank to start reconciling cards each carry a See a demo button as well

On the locked finance pages (Expenses, Assets & Liabilities, the Expenses Report, Profit & Loss and the Assets & Liabilities report), the Demo button stays clickable above the lock. On some pages the button is hidden while the page is loading or showing an error; the Detailed reference lists which.

Use the guided tour

  1. When the demo opens, the page dims and a spotlight highlights one area. A white card next to it shows progress dots, the step's title and text, and a counter such as "3 of 10".
  2. Press Next › to move on. Back returns to the previous step (from step 2). On tabbed pages the tour switches tabs by itself.
  3. On the last step, Next › becomes Got it!, which closes the tour. Skip closes it at any step.
  4. To watch it again, press Take a Tour (Take the tour on some pages) in the amber banner. It always starts again from step 1.

Click anywhere outside the cardCloses the tour. The page, including the sidebar, can't be clicked while the tour is open

When the tour closes, the page stays on whichever tab the tour last showed.

What works in a demo

  • Works: switching tabs, and on some demos a view switch, a filter or a read-only details window. The Lost Sales Report, Expenses Report and Services demos let you filter the sample. The Dashboard demo is fully browsable.
  • Greyed out or does nothing: saving, sending, creating, deleting, importing, exporting and printing. Nothing in a demo can change your store.
  • Takes you to a real page (you leave demo mode):
    • Order Management demo: Create Order opens the real Create Order page.
    • SMS Campaigns demo: the Campaigns, Reminders, Inbox and Quick SMS cards open the real SMS campaign create page, Schedule, Messages and Order Management.
    • Create Order demo: Add Rule opens the real Products page on Pricing Rules, and Add Program opens the real Loyalty Program page on Create Program, each in a new browser tab.
    • Procurement demo: Receive → on a pending order opens the real Receive tab.
    • Dashboard demo: every link is live, as its banner says.
    • The sidebar always goes to real pages.

Leave a demo

Press Exit Demo Mode (left-arrow icon) at the top right of the header. It opens the real page the demo copies. On the Order Management demo it is grey text at the start of the header toolbar. You can also click any sidebar item. The driver and customer portal demos have no exit; close the browser tab or go back.

Pages with no demo include the sidebar's Get Started and Onboarding (Profile Setup) pages, every Guide & Tips page, Customer Portal settings, Pro Marketing, Marketplace, Income Tax Prep, the Settings sub-pages and Shortcuts.

Tips & best practices

  • Watch a tour before you use a page for the first time. The arrow keys make it quick: → to move on, ← to go back.
  • Try before you upgrade. On the Basic plan, open the Messages, SMS Campaigns, Transactions, Workforce or finance demos to see what the Pro and Premium pages do.
  • Before your first stock import, open Procurement, switch to the Import tab, then press Demo for a tour of just the import screen.
  • Show a new driver or customer what they will see. The driver route and customer portal demos need no sign-in, so you can send someone the address.
  • Close the tour before you click around. While the tour is open, any click outside its card only closes the tour.

Troubleshooting

ProblemWhyWhat to do
I can't find the Demo buttonSome pages hide it while loading or showing an error. Settings shows it at the top of Company Account Settings. The sidebar's Get Started page is a different page from the Get Started hub and has noneWait for the page to load or reload it. For Get Started, use Shortcuts → Get Started
The tour no longer opens by itself on a demo I've usedOnce you close a tour, your browser remembers that demo page and doesn't start it again. Another browser, another device, or clearing your browsing data starts it overPress Take a Tour (or Take the tour) in the amber banner
The tour closed by itselfAny click outside the card, or Esc, closes it. It also closes the moment the page opens when you have already seen that demo's tour in this browserPress Take a Tour in the amber banner
The tour jumped aheadThe tour moves on by itself if the highlighted area doesn't appear within about 3 secondsPress ← or Back
The page is on a different tab after the tourThe page stays on the tab the tour last showedClick the tab you want
A button in the demo took me to a real pageA few demo links are real (listed in What works in a demo)Go back, or press Demo on the page again
Demo on Procurement opened only the import screenYou had chosen the Import tabSwitch to another tab and press Demo again. A store whose other tabs are still locked gets the four-tab demo without doing anything
A Settings demo section says it is not part of the demoA section with no sample pane names itself and points at the real page, instead of showing another section's paneOpen the real Settings page for that section
Nothing happens when I press a button in a demoAnything that would change data is switched off. Reading is not: in the Assets & Liabilities demo, Show definitions opens and an account row opens its window (for reading only)Nothing to fix
Clicking a complaint in the Complaints demo does nothingThe demo list is read-onlyNothing to fix
Finish stop or Send report in the driver demo is not greyed outBoth are the real screens, so both buttons work — in the demo they record nothing, send nothing and never ask for your location. Each screen says so before you press, and the closing message reads "Demo — nothing was recorded and nothing was sent."Nothing. Press either one, or Cancel
"Redirecting to sign in..."You are signed out, and demos inside the app need sign-inSign in, then open the demo again
"Redirecting..." then Shortcuts, on the Settings demoThe Settings demo sits behind the same check as the rest of SettingsAsk your owner, or use the other demos
I was sent to the billing pageYour free trial has ended, and demos are covered by the same check as every other pageChoose a plan in Settings → Plan & Billing

What's next

  • Get Started: the three steps to your first sale
  • Shortcuts: jump to any feature from one page
  • App layout: the sidebar, header and other parts of every page
  • Billing: what each plan includes, if a demo shows a page your plan locks

The driver's route screen and the customer portal order page have no Demo button of their own, because neither is a page anyone signs in to. Each is linked from the settings page that switches the feature on: See what the driver sees (opens a sample screen) in Settings → Delivery, and See what the customer sees (opens a sample page) in Settings → Customer Portal. Both open in a new tab, since neither sample has a way back into the app. The addresses are /drive/demo and /portal/demo. Company Account Settings has a Demo button at the top right of the Settings page; its demo is also at /settings/demo.

Who can use what
Who or whatCan open demos?Notes
Any signed-in user of a storeYes, all 38 demos with a Demo buttonPlan, add-on, feature switch and role are never checked on a demo page. Staff who aren't managers can open the Workforce demo. A menu item the owner hid for you doesn't close its demo either — but the Demo button sits on the real page, which does show "403 - Forbidden", so you would have to type the demo's address
Basic plan (not on a trial)YesPro and Premium demos open normally. On locked pages the Demo button floats above or stays clickable over the lock
Store without the Bank Reconciliation add-onYes, with the Demo button in the header or See a demo on the cardThe demo is exactly what that store is meant to look at before buying the add-on
Owner (Owner switch on, the owner role, or the store's only active member — people switched off or removed in Team don't count)Also the Settings demoThe Settings demo sits behind the same check as the rest of Settings, so everyone else opening /settings/demo sees "Redirecting..." and is sent to Shortcuts

Common questions

Can anything I do in a demo change my store's data? No. Demos show sample data and never load or save your store's records. Most controls are greyed out. A few links open the real page, and once you are there you are no longer in the demo.

Why didn't the tour open on a demo I've used before? Once you close a tour, your browser remembers that demo page and doesn't start it again there. Press Take a Tour in the amber banner to replay it from step 1. Another browser, another device, or clearing your browsing data starts it over on its own.

Can I see a Pro or Premium feature before I upgrade? Yes. Demos ignore your plan. On Basic, the Messages, SMS Campaigns and Transactions pages are locked, and their Demo button floats at the top right above the lock. On the locked finance pages the Demo button in the header stays clickable.

Why do the demo products look like my kind of store? 16 demos, including Create Order, Products, Services, Inventory, Procurement, Vendors, Labels and several reports, show sample data for the business type your store chose in Onboarding. The others use one fixed appliance-store sample.

I don't have bank feeds. How do I see the Bank Reconciliation demo? Open Finance → Bank Reconciliation. The Demo button is in the header even without the add-on, and the Bank feeds add-on card underneath has a See a demo button as well. Typing /finance/reconciliation/demo after your UpChannels web address still works.

Can I show a driver or a customer what they will see? Yes. The driver route demo (/drive/demo) and the customer portal demo (/portal/demo) need no sign-in, so anyone can open them — which is why the links to them, in Settings → Delivery and Settings → Customer Portal, open a new tab. Neither has a tour, and their buttons do nothing.

Where do I find what each tour step says? The Tour steps in every demo panel above lists every step title, grouped by tab. Each feature page's Detailed reference also has a Demo mode panel with what each step points at. The table under Every page with a demo links to each page.

Why did Procurement's Demo open only the import screen? When you press Demo after choosing the Import tab, it opens a demo of just that screen with an 11-step tour. Otherwise it opens the four-tab demo with a 12-step tour. A store with no procurement orders yet is shown Import because the other tabs stay locked until the first order, but that is not the same as choosing it: Demo still opens the four-tab walkthrough.
