Price Tags

Inventory → Price Tags prints the tags customers read on the floor: a big price, the MSRP struck through when it is higher, what they save, the product's key features and a barcode that scans at checkout. You pick the items, design the tag once, and print the whole batch.

Overview

  • Choose by category or purchase order. Group the list by Category or by Purchase order and tick a group to take every item in it. Your ticks stay when you filter, search or regroup.
  • One tag per product, plus the units that need their own. Ten identical new units share one tag. A unit with its own price, a condition other than New (a scratch-and-dent unit, say) or a grade gets a tag of its own. Turn on One tag per unit to list every serialized unit.
  • No price, no tag. An item without a retail price is flagged No price and left out of the print, with a list of what was left out. Nothing is ever printed with a made-up price.
  • The price on the tag is the price at the register. The tag prints the unit's own price when it has one, otherwise the product's. When you sell that unit and pick it in Select Specific Item, the sale starts at the same price.
  • Your logo by default. The tag's header prints the logo from Settings. With no logo it prints your store name.
  • Printing is recorded when you say so. After printing, Did the tags print OK? — Yes records each tag with today's price, so the list can show Old price when a price changes later.
  • Who can use it: everyone in your store, on every plan. Owners and managers also see cost and margin, and can save templates for the whole store. Staff never see cost here.
  • Set prices in a batch (owners and managers, and staff when the owner allows it). Step 2 fills in new prices for the ticked items — a % of MSRP, cost plus a markup, a target margin, a fixed price, or up or down by $ or % — rounded to .99, .95 or whole dollars if you like. Nothing is saved until you check the old → new list and confirm. Archived products are never changed, and you can undo the whole batch for 24 hours. Staff get Step 2 only when the owner turns on Allow staff to edit prices on price tags in Settings → Team, without the cost-based actions, and undo only their own batches.
  • Know when a tag is out of date. When a price changes after its tag was printed, a banner says how many tags show an old price, and Reprint lists and ticks them. The same count shows on the Quick Facts to-do list.
  • Every price change is recorded, wherever it was made: Price Tags, the product window, imports or the server.

Step by step: print a batch of tags

  1. Open Inventory → Price Tags. Check the Location (it starts at your home location).
  2. Step 1 — group by Category or Purchase order, then tick a group or single items. Check the Check column for warnings, and set Copies where you want more than one.
  3. Owners and managers, and staff the owner allows: click Set prices. Step 2 — pick an action (for example Set to % of MSRP), type the number, choose a rounding, and click Apply to N checked. Check the New price column, change any row by hand, then Save N price changes and confirm. Skip this step if the prices are right. Anyone else goes straight to the design.
  4. Click Design the tag. Step 3 — pick a tag size, tick what goes on the tag, and watch the Preview. If it says too much is switched on, click Auto-fit.
  5. Click Preview & print. Step 4 — look over the sheets, then click Print now. On an iPad or phone, click Open printable page and print from that tab.
  6. Answer Did the tags print OK? with Yes once the tags are out of the printer.

Tips & best practices

  • Print at 100% ("Actual size"), not "Fit to page", so the tags line up with the sheet.
  • Group by Purchase order when a delivery lands: tick the newest purchase order to tag everything that came in on it.
  • When the banner says tags show an old price, click Reprint: it lists and ticks exactly those items. Price changed since last tag does the same by hand.
  • A delivery just came in? Open the purchase order and click Price tags: the page opens on what came in on that order, already ticked.
  • Marking down old stock? Turn on Aged over 180 days (or use Make markdown tags on the Quick Facts to-do list), lower the prices in Step 2, and print.
  • Saved a batch by mistake? Undo this batch at the top of Step 2 puts the old prices back for 24 hours. A price someone changed again since is left alone. A staff member can undo only the batches they saved.
  • Use Preview worst case before a big run: it previews the item with the most text, so you see how the longest tag is shortened.
  • An owner or manager can save the design as a template and make it the store's default, so everyone prints the same tag.

Troubleshooting

IssueFix
An item isn't listedOnly products that are active and not archived are listed, at the chosen Location. With In stock only on, an item needs stock on hand here. Check the filters, then Clear filters
An item says No priceIt has no retail price. Give the product (or the unit) a price in Catalog → Products; it prints next time
A unit I expected isn't listed on its ownA unit gets its own row only when it has its own price, a condition other than New, or a grade. Turn on One tag per unit to list every unit
The Check column says "Variant prices differ"A variant of this product has its own price adjustment. The register charges the product price, which is what the tag prints
The Check column says "Pricing rule"A pricing rule would take something off this item at the register, so the customer may pay less than the tag. Pricing rules are never printed on tags
The logo doesn't printAdd a logo in Settings. A logo that is not a web address prints the store name instead
A tag's text is cut shortStep 4 lists the tags that were shortened to fit and how. Pick a larger tag size, lower the text size, or switch fields off
The code prints as text instead of barsThe code is too long to scan at this tag width, or the barcode drawer could not load. Pick a larger tag size, or reload the page
Print now does nothingAllow pop-ups for UpChannels, or use Open printable page
Step 2 says "Only an owner or manager can change prices"Batch prices are for owners and managers, and for staff only when the owner turns on Allow staff to edit prices on price tags in Settings → Team. You can still print tags for items that have a price
A price change was "not changed: its price changed after you previewed it"Someone changed that price while you were working. Refresh, check the new price, and apply your change again
A price change was "not changed: the product is archived"Archived products are never repriced. Restore the product first if you still sell it
Undo this batch is goneA batch can be undone for 24 hours, once. Change the prices again in Step 2 instead
Undo left some prices as they wereThose prices were changed again after the batch, or the product was archived or the unit sold since. The toast names them
New prices are not on the printed tagsTags print the saved prices. Save the new prices in Step 2 first

Price change history

Every change to a product's or a unit's retail price is recorded with the old and new price, when, who (when known) and where it came from: a Price Tags batch, an undo, a person's own edit, or the server (imports and the unit window's server path, which is recorded without a name). Nobody can edit or delete the record. It is what lets Undo this batch leave alone any price changed since.

Selling a unit at its tag price

When you add a product to a sale and pick a unit in Select Specific Item, the line starts at that unit's tag price if it has its own price, with a note such as "Priced at this unit's tag: $699.00 (was $899.00)". Going back to bulk stock starts the line at the catalogue price again. The product's catalogue price is never changed, so the saved order shows the unit's lower price as a discount from it. Scrap orders are not priced.
